10/03/22: Fairy Tale of Mirrors
Margo was brushing her teeth when she noticed the man in the mirror. He was surprised too.
“I was just minding my own business,” he said. She glanced down at his bare chest. It was very impressive. “Hey, eyes up here,” he said.
Their work schedules lined up such that they always started and ended the day together. It was nice talking to someone who had no bearing on your world.
Naturally, they fell in love. They went on dates to the park, each holding a handheld mirror in their respective realities.
One day, a hurricane swept through Margo’s town. Her bathroom, along with its mirror, was utterly destroyed. She went to their agreed upon meeting spot, the mirror in the local public library bathroom, at their appointed backup time, but found that the library was ruined too.
She went through their list of contingencies. On New Year’s, at midnight, she took a handheld mirror to their favorite tree by the park. She found him there, his face reflecting moonlight through the mirror.
“You came,” Margo said.
“That’s what she said,” he replied.
That year, they both found a plot of land out by the mountains in the West Coast. They each built a house in their respective reality, with the same floor plan and materials.
Of course the house was made of mirrors. And of course from thence forth, no matter where they were in their house, they were never apart. For the most part, they were quite happy.
