7/25/22: Obi-Wan Chemotherapy
The chemotherapy drug “Obenwanibinimab” was informally nicknamed “Obi-wan” by oncologists. It was catchy and easy to remember. It spread through the medical community quickly after a happy hour at an annual oncology conference, and pretty soon everyone was saying it.
It didn’t take long before Disney Corp caught wind. There was some internal debate about the appropriate response. Then, a video of a small child undergoing chemo dressed up as Obi-Wan went viral.
“Well if we block it now, the optics are terrible,” the legal department said. “Why don’t we just lean into it.”
Pretty soon, the chemo regimen was officially Obi-Wan branded. It was good marketing. Sales of both Obenwanibinimab ad Obi-Wan action figures skyrocketed. Other companies followed suit, and within the decade, the majority of new medications released every year had a media tie-in.
That is, until the “Winnie-The-Pooh” headache relief deaths began.
